Amcor, which supplies a broad range of plastic, fibre, metal and glass packaging products, had to perform the SAP technical upgrade in order for it to embark on a number of key functional projects, which included rolling out SAP financial applications and the implementation of a centralised procurement system.
Ken Lam, Amcor’s Manager of Major IT Projects, says the prime objective of the upgrade was to ensure there was minimal disruption to Amcor’s day-to-day business function.
“The challenge for us was to reduce the impact of the upgrade to the business and enable the other SAP project teams working on the rollout programme to meet their timeline without disruption.”
Lam says the upgrade involved a signifi cant amount of functional verification, and the reimplementation and retesting of its entire system including all interfaces.
Amcor deployed an SAP upgrade automation tool, Panaya, in order to establish a gap analysis between the old and new SAP versions.
“We then tasked Oxygen with reviewing the gap analysis report and executing the upgrade, ensuring the necessary validations and modifications to the existing components were performed correctly.”
Oxygen deployed its portfolio of upgrade tools to accelerate upgrade processes and help identify and monitor risks.
Lam says the cutover was complicated and included the migration to a new system landscape, including hardware platform, operating system and DBMS – all of which required extensive prior planning.
“The project was a signifi cant and strategic upgrade for Amcor. Initially there was a high degree of concern about whether we could achieve the upgrade to ECC6 due to the heavily customised nature of Amcor’s SAP environment.
“But thanks to the strategy we put in place – and the expert skills provided by Oxygen – the project went extremely well.”
