Oxygen partners with PwC to help organisations meet obligations under new greenhouse gas legislation

The new National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System (NGERS), which came into effect on July 1, 2008, establishes a national framework for Australian corporations to report on greenhouse gas emissions, and energy consumption and production.
Oxygen’s National Solution Leader (Platform and Technology) Australia, Mark Finlayson, says the legislation coincides with the announcement by SAP of the Australian launch of its Environmental Compliance (EC) product, an enterprise-wide software platform which enables companies to monitor and manage their greenhouse gas emissions to ensure they comply with national and worldwide environmental laws and policies.
“The legislation, which is being introduced in three waves starting with the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, requires organisations to start collating data in preparation to undertake regulatory reporting with regard to their environmental footprint. By the time the 2010/11 reporting period rolls around the legislation is expected to cover around 700 medium-to-large corporations in the country.”
Finlayson says the legislation will compel companies to create robust carbon management systems in order to monitor carbon consumption and emissions, and to forecast carbon growth and set reduction targets.
“Measuring and monitoring the carbon footprint will become an integral part of day-to-day business practice. Pricing carbon into future investment decisions and identifying the best way to leverage the carbon emission trading scheme will become critical to the ongoing success of an organisation.”
Identifying assets, and collating information about vehicles, plant and equipment and feeding it into the environmental compliance process will be essential says Finlayson. “Data will also flow out from the carbon monitoring system to inform other key business processes, such as budgeting and forecasting.”
The partnership will see PricewaterhouseCoopers provide strategic consulting services around all issues to do with environmental compliance, with Oxygen on hand to provide implementation expertise in the new SAP EC toolset.
“The goal is to provide a solution that maps against the four key NGERS processes, namely data collection, emission and energy inventory, monitoring and management, and reporting. The SAP platform provides an automated, near real-time, event driven solution which can be integrated seamlessly to an organisation’s existing SAP environment.”
Finlayson says the new SAP EC solution provides SAP and non-SAP customers with a consistent, auditable and transparent picture of its business processes, while also allowing corporations to define regulatory scenarios with key performance indicators.
“SAP EC enables the management of greenhouse gas emissions at process, plant and corporate levels. Once implemented it can continuously analyse the CO2 status of a company and create compliance reports at the touch of a button.”
