Chief Executive Role Change AnnouncementRecently, I took over as Chief Executive of Oxygen. I am looking forward to guiding the company towards continued success and wanted to briefly outline my approach to achieving this end.
My priority in taking over the role will be to ensure Oxygen continues to maintain its reputation for excellent project execution and customer accountability. I will also be striving to ensure Oxygen delivers to the demands our customers face in the future.
On one level this means business as usual. Oxygen remains committed to helping you extract maximum value from your investment in SAP’s leading enterprise application platform.
SAP comes in a size that fits small-to-medium companies

Many small-to-medium business decision-makers are surprised, and often quite excited, when I tell them that they can get their hands on a mid-market SAP product – SAP Business All-in-One. In fact, over 80% of all SAP customers are SME organisations.
I joined Oxygen to head up its New Zealand SAP Business All-in-One sales team and three months into the job, there is a huge level of interest that exists for the product in this market. Successful local companies who are experiencing growth – and need more from their business management system – are keen to learn more.

But, it is also true to say that many business owners on hearing the word SAP typically think about large ERP systems and multi-million dollar implementation projects. “SAP is too big for us, we are not that complicated,” is a common response. Others are aware of SAP Business One – SAP’s tier three product which is aimed at smaller organisations.

It is my happy task to inform them of the capabilities of SAP Business All-in-One – a pre-configured solution that offers organisations a faster, smarter way to get up and running with SAP software. SAP Business All-in-One takes the ERP functionality that SAP has developed over the last 35 years and makes it available in a templated product – especially designed to meet the needs of growing small to mid-market companies.
It is implemented using best practice processes and pre-defined templates which mean it can be deployed rapidly allowing customers to attain a better – and quicker return on investment.
That is music to the ears of growing companies who typically have too many business improvement projects to pursue and not enough time or capital to undertake them all. Oxygen can provide SAP Business All-in-One customers with a clearly defined implementation scope and timeframe and pre-configure the system so organisations benefit from a low risk, high value implementation.
In some instances we can get customers up and running with the software in as little as 12 weeks.

Choosing the right user interface

When starting a new SAP project deciding which user interface technology to deploy is one of the first, and most important, decisions to be made. What follows is a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of what SAP offers in this regard. This is aimed only to inform, because in the end there is no definitive framework for choosing between these technologies. Sometimes it can be as much a personal choice as a logical one.

In the dark ages of SAP there was only one choice of user environment – the Graphical User Interface (GUI). However, this changed with the arrival of SAP Portal as another avenue for application delivery.

Add to this the release of the Netweaver Business Client (NWBC) and the waters have become somewhat muddied. For a detailed explanation of what the NWBC is please see this excellent summary put together previously by my colleague Julie.
So which user interface is the best?

Oxygen - making SAP mobility a reality

“Think before you leap” is the message we are telling customers considering deploying mobile SAP solutions.
Working in conjunction with partners Sybase, Big Tin Can and UXC Connect, Oxygen is well positioned to deliver sensible, robust enterprise mobility solutions, extending core business processes onto mobile devices.

In the past, mobile deployments focused on mail and messaging and were about enhancing user communication on the go. The demand now is for a broader range of mobile capabilities as organisations realise that access to key information, at any time and any place, has moved from a competitive advantage to a competitive necessity.

During 2011 corporations have started to deliver new functions to the mobile device for customers, employees, partners and consumers.

Organisations need to have a corporate mobile strategy in place that supports their wider IT&T strategy and business goals. Issues tend to arise when opportunistic mobile deployments are undertaken without thinking through security, connectivity, platform considerations and accessibility.

Apply data compression, gain improved performance

SAP customers wishing to reduce IT infrastructure costs and extend the lifespan of their IT assets should explore the possibilities of database compression – particularly if they are running Microsoft SQL Server 2008.The ability to compress database tables in SQL Server 2008 is an effective feature which allows organisations to zip up data into a compressed form, allowing them to store it in a smaller space. Smaller database equals less disk space, which can lead to improved disk performance.
Recently, I have been testing this hypothesis – both internally at Oxygen and at a customer site. The results are very promising.

While the act of compressing the data increases CPU useage, this drawback is far outweighed by the improvement in disc input / output speed. On the trial runs performed on Oxygen’s database we have reduced the size of the database by 50%.

The customer site was running SQL Server 2005. We installed the 2008 version and performed trials to see how much space we could save with the hope of releasing it into production.

Time for a Spring Clean? The Benefits of Modernising Your SAP Platform

SAP is consistently making new business and technical capabilities available for its customers. But are you ready to take advantage of these new innovations, or could your SAP infrastructure benefit from a spring clean?

Innovation, Innovation, Innovation!

If you’ve attended any of the SAP events this year, be it Sapphire Now, any of the Mastering SAP conferences, or the recent World Tour, there is one word that SAP keeps repeating over and over – and that is innovation. Sometimes it is “innovation without disruption”, and sometimes it’s “game-changing innovation”, but one thing is being made very clear – SAP is consistently making new business and technical capabilities available for their customers.

So why is now the right time for organisations to modernise their SAP landscape? Because, in the last few months, there has been a slew of new releases that affect almost every area of the SAP portfolio. This includes Business Suite Innovations 2010, NetWeaver 7.3, Solution Manager 7.1, Sybase Unwired Platform 2.0, HANA 1.0 and shortly BusinessObjects Business Intelligence 4.0 and Gateway 2.0.
